The face is cut with a graver rather than machine-engraved, which means it is deeper, slightly uneven, and still legible after a lifetime of being knocked against desks.
I cut initials, a device, or a shape you draw badly on a napkin. What I will not do is copy somebody else's crest, which is both bad manners and, in Scotland, actually illegal.
The shank is thicker at the shoulders than most signets, so it does not thin and split where the finger bends. It is the difference between a ring you resize and a ring you replace.
